New Resource for Writing Goals and Objectives!

The state has posted a new resource online — an easy to navigate list of the Grade Level Standards for English/Language Arts and Math (available here).

The state standards that are listed in the SpEd database are the Anchor Standards which are broad, overall standards.  The Grade Level Standards specify how the Anchor Standards apply at each grade level, and are very useful when developing IEP goals and objectives.

Below is a quick guide for how to find the Grade Level Standards that correspond with the Anchor Standards that are listed in the SpEd database.  (Additional guides for Math Standards can be found here.)

In this example, which shows the Reading standards for grade 1, the highlighted Grade Level Standards corresponds to the Anchor Standard, “R.CS.5 Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene or stanza) relate to each other and the whole.”  The Grade Level Standard (green underline) describes how that Anchor Standard would apply to a 1st grade student.

You would find Anchor Standard R.CS.5 in the SpEd database by choosing (Area) –> Reading,  (Standard Type) –> Content**(Strand or Domain) –> Craft and Structure,  and then choosing R.CS.5 from the (Standard) drop down list.

**(English/LA standards are “Content” or “Foundational Skills” (Reading K-5 only), Math standards can be “Content” or “Practice” — cheat sheet here.)
